Thirty Years of Impact, and Yet So Far To GoIf you're considering a charitable contribution, you'll want to know: Is this cause important? Is the need great? When Eunice Kennedy Shriver, President John F. Kennedy's sister, envisioned Special Olympics in her Maryland backyard in the early 1960's, she didn't know it would lead to an international organization serving more than a million athletes in more than 150 countries. What she did know is that men, women and children with mental retardation had the right to compete, to grow and to learn like everyone else. The latest estimates show there are 170 million people with mental retardation throughout the world, many in your own community - 170 million people who could benefit from physical exercise, who could build self-esteem through sports, who could become more productive members of our society. Special Olympics have proven that it can help - but we have far to go and we can only do it if you help Special Olympics.
